This medal, properly called the "Medal of the Veterans of the Spanish
American War," was awarded to American who could prove that they fought
with the Cubans, and it had to be applied for. A copy of a Certificate
of award indicates that this medal was presented to Corp. Oscar P. Ruth,
on September 7, 1953.
The style of the medal is similar to the Liberator
Medal, but the front reads: "CUBA /A
LOS /VETERANOS /DE LA ?GUERRA/HISPANO-/AMERICANA." The reverse reads:
"FIRST. / THAT THE/ PEOPLE OF THE/ISLAND OF CUBA/ARE, AND OF/RIGHT
OUGHT/TO BE, FREE, AND/INDEPENDENT./FROM THE JOINT/RESOLUTION OF/APRIL
20TH/1898."
