The Spanish
Battleship PELAYO's Broadside Guns

The image below shows PELAYO's
braoside guns. This view, very reminiscent of the broadside of a
Napoleonic era ship of the line with its guns poking through gunports,
shows some of the limitations of the vessel. These broadside guns could
not have had the horizontal range of fire (azimuth) as would guns placed
in sponsons (the guns could not be fired nearly forward or aft).
Note also the unusual shape of the hull. This type of
design can also be seen in on the American cruiser BROOKLYN.
