History:
The Illinois Volunteer Light Artillery, Battery A was the only
artillery battery raised in Illinois during the Spanish American War.
The regiment was mustered into service at Springfield, Illinois,
on May 12, 1898. At the time of mustering-in, the battery consisted of
four officers and one hundred and twenty enlisted men. One week later,
the battery was ordered to Camp Thomas, located on the former
Civil War battlefield Chickamauga at Chickamauga, Georgia. At Camp
Thomas, the battery was assigned to the Light Artillery Brigade of the
First Army Corps
Next the battery was ordered to Newport News, Virginia, arriving on
July 26. Two days later, the battery found itself aboard the U.S. Army transport ROUMANIAN
bound for Puerto Rico. The transport
arrived at Puerto Rico on August 4. Moving ashore,
the battery participated in operations in the vicinity of Guayama. On
August 12, Spain and the United States agreed to an armistice, and the
war's fighting ended. The battery remained in Puerto
Rico for less than a month, departing from Ponce on
September 7, bound for New York City, where it arrived on September 13.
The battery then arrived in Danville, Illinois, two days later.
The battery was given a sixty day furlough beginning September 22. On
coming back from furlough, the battery was mustered out of service on
November 25. At the time of mustering-out, the battery consisted of four
officers and one hundred sixty-four men. During its term of service, the
battery lost two enlisted men to disease.
The war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris on Dcember 10,
1898.
